Tangent-ball techniques for shape processing
Shape processing defines a set of theoretical and algorithmic tools for creating, measuring and modifying digital representations of shapes. Â Such tools are of paramount importance to many disciplines of computer graphics, including modeling, animation, visualization, and image processing. Â Many applications of shape processing can be found in the entertainment and medical industries.
In an attempt to improve upon many previous shape processing techniques, the present thesis explores the theoretical and algorithmic aspects of a difference measure, which involves fitting a ball (disk in 2D and sphere in 3D) so that it has at least one tangential contact with each shape and the ball interior is disjoint from both shapes.
We propose a set of ball-based operators and discuss their properties, implementations, and applications. Â We divide the group of ball-based operations into unary and binary as follows:
Unary operators include:
* Identifying details (sharp, salient features, constrictions)
* Smoothing shapes by removing such details, replacing them by fillets and roundings
* Segmentation (recognition, abstract modelization via centerline and radius variation) of tubular structures
Binary operators include:
* Measuring the local discrepancy between two shapes
* Computing the average of two shapes
* Computing point-to-point correspondence between two shapes
* Computing circular trajectories between corresponding points that meet both shapes at right angles
* Using these trajectories to support smooth morphing (inbetweening)
* Using a curve morph to construct surfaces that interpolate between contours on consecutive slices
The technical contributions of this thesis focus on the implementation of these tangent-ball operators and their usefulness in applications of shape processing. We show specific applications in the areas of animation and computer-aided medical diagnosis. Â These algorithms are simple to implement, mathematically elegant, and fast to execute.Ph.D.Committee Chair: Jarek Rossignac; Committee Member: Greg Slabaugh; Committee Member: Greg Turk; Committee Member: Karen Liu; Committee Member: Maryann Simmon
3D ball skinning using PDEs for generation of smooth tubular surfaces
We present an approach to compute a smooth, interpolating skin of an ordered set of
3D balls. By construction, the skin is constrained to be C1 continuous, and for each
ball, it is tangent to the ball along a circle of contact. Using an energy formulation,
we derive differential equations that are designed to minimize the skin’s surface area,
mean curvature, or convex combination of both. Given an initial skin, we update the
skin’s parametric representation using the differential equations until convergence
occurs. We demonstrate the method’s usefulness in generating interpolating skins
of balls of different sizes and in various configurations

Variational skinning of an ordered set of discrete 2D balls
This paper considers the problem of computing an interpolating
envelope of an ordered set of 2D balls. By construction, the envelope
is constrained to be C1 continuous, and for each ball, it touches the
ball at a point and is tangent to the ball at the point of contact. Using
an energy formulation, we derive differential equations that are designed
to minimize the envelope’s arc length and/or curvature subject to these
constraints. Given an initial envelope, we update the envelope’s parameters
using the differential equations until convergence occurs. We demonstrate
the method’s usefulness in generating interpolating envelopes of
balls of different sizes and in various configurations

3D ball skinning using PDEs for generation of smooth tubular surfaces
We present an approach to compute a smooth, interpolating skin of an ordered set of 3D balls. By construction, the skin is constrained to be C-1 continuous, and for each ball, it is tangent to the ball along a circle of contact. Using an energy formulation, we derive differential equations that are designed to minimize the skin's surface area, mean curvature, or convex combination of both. Given an initial skin, we update the skin's parametric representation using the differential equations until convergence occurs. Factors Dictating Carbene Formation at (PNP)Ir
The mechanistic subtleties involved with the interaction of an amido/bis(phosphine)-supported (PNP)Ir fragment with a series of linear and cyclic ethers have been investigated using density functional theory. Our analysis has revealed the factors dictating reaction direction toward either an iridium-supported carbene or a vinyl ether adduct. The (PNP)Ir structure will allow carbene formation only from accessible carbons α to the ethereal oxygen, such that d electron back-donation from the metal to the carbene ligand is possible. Should these conditions be unavailable, the main competing pathway to form vinyl ether can occur, but only if the (PNP)Ir framework does not sterically interfere with the reacting ether. In situations where steric hindrance prevents unimpeded access to both pathways, the reaction may progress to the initial C−H activation but no further. Our mechanistic analysis is density functional independent and whenever possible confirmed experimentally by trapping intermediate species experimentally. We have also highlighted an interesting systematic error present in the DFT analysis of reactions where steric environment alters considerably within a reaction
Parkersburg Area Economic Outlook: 2022-2026
The Parkersburg Area economy experienced a substantial loss in jobs during COVID-19 recession, as the combination of public health measures and massive negative shock to economic activity globally caused employment in the area to plunge by nearly 8,000 jobs in early-2020. By some measures, the area’s recession was not demonstrably worse than what occurred at the state and national level yet was still unprecedented in terms of how fast these losses happened when compared to previous economic downturns. At the same time, the area has recovered nearly 6,000 jobs over the last six quarters, putting its overall recovery on par with the statewide average, in which payrolls have increased to just over 97 percent of their pre-pandemic level
Ink-and-Ray: Bas-Relief Meshes for Adding Global Illumination Effects to Hand-Drawn Characters
We present a new approach for generating global illumination renderings of hand-drawn characters using only a small set of simple annotations. Our system exploits the concept of bas-relief sculptures, making it possible to generate 3D proxies suitable for rendering without requiring side-views or extensive user input. We formulate an optimization process that automatically constructs approximate geometry sufficient to evoke the impression of a consistent 3D shape. The resulting renders provide the richer stylization capabilities of 3D global illumination while still retaining the 2D handdrawn look-and-feel. We demonstrate our approach on a varied set of handdrawn images and animations, showing that even in comparison to ground truth renderings of full 3D objects, our bas-relief approximation is able to produce convincing global illumination effects, including self-shadowing, glossy reflections, and diffuse color bleeding
Control of Emission Color with N-Heterocyclic Carbene (NHC) Ligands in Phosphorescent Three-Coordinate Cu(I) Complexes
A series of three phosphorescent mononuclear (NHC)–Cu(I) complexes were prepared and characterized. Photophysical properties were found to be largely controlled by the NHC ligand chromophore. Variation of the NHC ligand leads to emission colour tuning over 200 nm range from blue to red, and emission efficiencies of 0.16–0.80 in the solid state
